    LEIPZIG BOOK FAIR(18 - 21 March 2010)

    Leipzig Book Fair 2010

New exhibition feature: section for music publishers

Books + Media Careers Day back for the second time

Leipzig Book Fair Prize for outstanding new publications

4th Leipzig Information und Library Congress

Europe's biggest literary festival "Leipzig Reads"

Preparations are well under way for the book and media industry's spring event. More than 2,100 exhibitors are again expected at the Leipzig Book Fair 2010. With the high-profile literary festival "Leipzig Reads", the fair marks the launch of the industry's year for its publishing companies, authors and booksellers, for the media and literary enthusiasts. What makes the fair so special is the close involvement of the public and the big impact in the public arena for the spring's new publications, including many titles by young authors.

New exhibition feature: section for music publishers

The spectrum covered by the Leipzig Book Fair is extended in 2010 to include music publishers. "Leipzig is a city of music, music has a long tradition in Leipzig. So what could be more natural than to take up this tradition and position the topic of music and music literature at the Leipzig Book Fair", says Oliver Zille, director of the Leipzig Book Fair. Opening up to this special interest area not only gives regulars with a musical interest a new port of call, but could appeal to new target groups too.

"Books + Media Careers Day" back for the second time

In cooperation with the German Publishers und Booksellers Association - Börsenverein -, the Leipzig Book Fair is organising the second "Books + Media Careers Day" for 19 March 2010 at the Congress Center Leipzig (CCL). The Careers Day sets out to give school leavers and professional beginners help for the way forward and to present the various career profiles and options in the book industry. In panel discussions and talks, executives from publishing companies and bookselling provide an overview of opportunities for starting and developing in these careers. For the first time, information events for trainers and training college lecturers will also be linked to the Careers Day.

6th Leipzig Book Fair Prize for outstanding new publications and translations

Presentation of the Leipzig Book Fair Prize is one of the highlights. With prize money of 45,000 euros, the awards will be announced on Thursday, 18 March 2010, in the categories Fiction, Non-Fiction/Essays and Translation. The panel of judges chooses outstanding new German-language titles published since the last Leipzig Book Fair. Since July, the panel has been chaired by journalist Verena Auffermann. Other new members of the Leipzig Book Prize septet are Jens Bisky, feature section editor at the Süddeutsche Zeitung, and Dr. Adam Soboczynski, feature section editor at the ZEIT. The Literarische Colloquium Berlin (LCB) and the weekly newspaper DIE ZEIT are partners for the award, and the "Leipzig Book Fair Prize" is also supported by the Free State of Saxony and Leipzig City. The nominees will be announced on 11 February 2010.

4th Leipzig Information und Library Congress at the Leipzig Book Fair

The library and information association BID - Bibliothek und Information Deutschland - will be holding the 4th Leipzig Information und Library Congress from 15 to 18 March 2010. Around 3,000 librarians and information specialists will meet in the Congress Center Leipzig (CCL). Headlined "People want knowledge! - Libraries in the 21st century: international, intercultural, interactive", the congress invites its attendees to look into the current problems and important future issues facing the library and information sector.

Spain is the 2010 guest nation at the congress. Talks, workshops and working sessions will provide opportunities for in depth professional dialogue. A specialist exhibition with more than 100 exhibitors accompanies the congress from 15 to 17 March 2010. More information is available on the internet at www.bid-kongress2010.de

"Leipzig Reads" - an entire city celebrates the Book Fair

Once again in 2010, Europe's biggest literary festival - "Leipzig Reads" - will bring tens of thousands of literary fans to the Leipzig Book Fair and Leipzig's city centre. Around 1,900 events at the widest variety of venues provide for exciting reading experiences and direct contact between reader and author. In recent years, readings have been given not just at the fair, in libraries and bookshops, but also at the zoo, in swimming baths, at cemeteries and in hairdressing salons. The literary festival is organised by Leipziger Messe in cooperation with Leipzig City, the German Publishers und Booksellers Association - Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels e.V. -, broadcasters Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk, Club Bertelsmann, the "Haus des Buches" committee, and publishing companies taking part at the fair.

Once again in spring 2010, Leipzig's Antiquarian Book Fair and "buch + art – Art for Books" will also enhance the Leipzig Book Fair's attraction for the general public.
